Have you ever set a goal that sounded amazing at the time…

Only to find yourself halfway through thinking:

“Wait… why did I even want this again?” 😅

You start off excited.

Motivated.

Full of energy.

And then somewhere along the way…

That energy fades.

The goal starts to feel heavy.

You procrastinate.

You question everything.

And suddenly, what once felt exciting now feels like an obligation.

If that’s ever happened to you — you’re not alone.

In fact, it’s incredibly common.

Because here’s the truth:

It’s really easy to set goals that look good on paper.

But it’s much harder to set goals that actually feel aligned, achievable, and worth your time.

And that difference?

It’s everything.

Why So Many Goals Fall Apart

Let’s break this down for a moment.

Why do so many goals start strong… and then fall flat?

It’s usually not because you’re lazy.

Or inconsistent.

Or lacking discipline.

It’s because the goal itself wasn’t quite right.

Maybe:

  • It wasn’t truly aligned with what you want

  • It was based on what you thought you should do

  • It didn’t fit your current season of life or business

  • It required more time or energy than you realistically had

So even though the goal looked good…

It didn’t feel right.

And when something doesn’t feel right, it’s incredibly hard to stay committed to it.

The Difference Between “Good” Goals and “Right” Goals

A “good” goal might:

  • Sound impressive

  • Look productive

  • Get approval from others

  • Fit into what everyone else is doing

But a “right” goal?

That’s different.

A right goal:

  • Feels aligned with your vision

  • Matches your current capacity

  • Excites you and challenges you

  • Moves you forward in a meaningful way

And when you’re working toward the right goal…

Things don’t necessarily become easy.

But they do become clearer.

More energising.

More sustainable.

Before You Set Your Next Goal, Pause

Before you jump into your next big milestone…

Your next launch…

Your next “this is the thing that will change everything” idea…

Pause.

Because a few minutes of reflection now can save you weeks (or months) of frustration later.

These are the five questions I come back to again and again — for myself and for my clients.

They’re simple.

But they’re powerful.

1. Why Do I Actually Want This?

This is where it all begins.

Ask yourself:

“Why do I want this goal?”

And then ask yourself again.

Because your first answer might be surface-level.

Go deeper.

Is it because:

  • It genuinely excites you?

  • It aligns with what you value?

  • It feels meaningful to you?

Or is it because:

  • You think you should be doing it?

  • You’ve seen someone else do it?

  • It feels like the “next logical step”?

There’s nothing wrong with being inspired by others.

But your goals need to be rooted in your reasons.

Because when things get challenging (and they will), your “why” is what keeps you going.

If that “why” isn’t strong or authentic…

Motivation won’t last.

2. Does This Move Me Closer to My Bigger Vision?

It’s so easy to get busy.

To fill your time with tasks, projects, and ideas.

But busyness doesn’t always equal progress.

So ask yourself:

“Does this goal actually move me closer to what I want long-term?”

Your bigger vision might include:

  • The type of business you want to build

  • The lifestyle you want to create

  • The way you want to spend your time

  • The kind of impact you want to have

Now compare your goal to that vision.

Does it support it?

Or distract from it?

Because sometimes the biggest trap isn’t doing nothing…

It’s doing things that look productive but don’t actually move you forward.

3. What Would “Done” Look Like — and Feel Like?

This is where clarity becomes practical.

Ask yourself:

“What does success actually look like here?”

Be specific.

  • What will be completed?

  • What result are you aiming for?

  • What does “finished” mean?

But don’t stop there.

Also ask:

“What will it feel like?”

  • Relief?

  • Pride?

  • Confidence?

  • Freedom?

Because if you can’t clearly picture the finish line…

It’s going to be very hard to reach it.

You’ll drift.

You’ll second-guess.

You’ll keep moving the goalposts.

Clarity creates direction.

And direction creates momentum.

4. What Am I Willing to Trade for This?

This is the question most people avoid.

But it’s one of the most important.

Because every goal has a cost.

Time.

Energy.

Focus.

Attention.

So ask yourself:

“What am I willing to trade for this?”

Because every “yes” is also a “no.”

If you say yes to this goal, you might be saying no to:

  • Other projects

  • Free time

  • Rest

  • Social plans

  • Simpler options

And that’s not a bad thing.

But it needs to be a conscious choice.

Because when you’re aware of the trade-offs…

You’re less likely to feel resentful or overwhelmed later.

You chose it.

And that changes everything.

5. Is This Realistic for the Next 90 Days?

Let’s talk about ambition for a second.

Ambition is great.

Big goals are exciting.

But unrealistic timelines?

That’s where things start to fall apart.

So ask yourself:

“Is this actually realistic for the next 90 days?”

Not in an ideal world.

In your real life.

With your current:

  • Time

  • Energy

  • Resources

  • Responsibilities

Because we’re not here to enter the burnout Olympics. 🥵

We’re building sustainable businesses.

The kind that grow over time.

The kind that support your life — not consume it.

So instead of asking:

“What’s the biggest thing I could possibly do?”

Ask:

“What’s the most meaningful thing I can realistically achieve?”

That’s where progress lives.

The Magic Combo: Exciting and Doable

Here’s where it all comes together.

The best goals aren’t just exciting.

And they’re not just realistic.

They’re both.

They stretch you — but don’t break you.

They challenge you — but don’t overwhelm you.

They energise you — but don’t drain you completely.

That balance?

That’s the magic.

What Happens When You Set Aligned Goals

When your goals pass these five questions, something shifts.

You:

  • Feel more motivated (because it actually matters to you)

  • Make clearer decisions (because you know your direction)

  • Stay more consistent (because it feels doable)

  • Experience less burnout (because it fits your capacity)

And perhaps most importantly…

You stop second-guessing yourself.

Because you’ve already done the thinking upfront.

What Happens When You Don’t

On the flip side…

When you skip this process, you might:

  • Chase goals that don’t truly matter to you

  • Feel constantly overwhelmed

  • Jump from idea to idea

  • Start things but struggle to finish them

  • Question your ability or discipline

But the issue isn’t you.

It’s the lack of alignment.

Make This Part of Your Process

You don’t need to overcomplicate this.

Next time you’re:

  • Planning a new offer

  • Mapping out a launch

  • Setting weekly priorities

  • Thinking about your next big move

Pause.

Run your goal through these five questions.

Give yourself space to think.

Be honest with your answers.

And trust what comes up.
