How To Get the “Right” Followers – and why you need them.

One of the most common mistakes new and small businesses make when starting out on social media is that they don’t think strategically about who their followers should be.

I know it’s hard to get followers when you’re brand new and this is why so many people just accept anyone and everyone – but that is going to do you more harm than good in the long run, here’s why…

Algorithms don’t care about the amount of followers you have, but they do care about the amount of engagement you get from those followers. The more engagement you get, the better the algorithm thinks your post is and the more reach it will get as a result.

So, if you put out a post today and you get some immediate likes and shares there’s a good chance that your post will be shown to more people on the platform


If you put out a post today and there is no engagement, the post will just die a death right there and then.  No one, other than the initial few people who got shown it in their feeds, will ever see it.

Now, it’s worth pointing out at this stage that only around 2% of your followers will see the post when it’s published.  That means that about 2 out of every 100 followers you have will actually see it in their feed.

This means that to get enough eyeballs on your post 3 things must happen.

  1. You need to make sure that you have a large audience as 2% of 10,000 is a whole lot more than 2% of 100
  2. You need to make sure that you are getting the “right” people to follow you ie. your ideal customers.  The right followers will be more likely to be interested in what you’re posting about and therefore more likely t engage with it.
  3. You need to make sure that you are creating content that engages your audience.  This can be informative, inspirational, educational or entertaining.  Mix up the types of content too – videos, images, text, infographics, live-streams, reels, stories etc.
