When you run a small business, it can feel like everyone has an opinion about what kind of support you need.
You need a coach.
You need a mentor.
You need a mastermind.
You need accountability.
You need a strategy day.
You need a business plan.
You need to “work on your mindset.”
You need to post more on LinkedIn, make reels, start a podcast, write a book and probably learn interpretive dance while you’re at it.
No wonder small business owners feel confused.
Because when you’re already wearing all the hats, juggling all the things and wondering why your business still isn’t paying you properly, the last thing you need is more confusing advice.
You need to understand what kind of support will actually help you move forward.
So let’s talk about the difference between business coaching and business mentoring, and what you might really need as a small business owner.
What Is Business Coaching?
Business coaching is usually focused on helping you work towards a specific goal.
A business coach may help you ask better questions, challenge your thinking, create a plan, set targets, take action and stay accountable.
Coaching can be really useful when you know something needs to change, but you need help getting clarity on what that change should be.
For example, business coaching might help you with:
setting clearer goals
creating a business plan
improving confidence
working through decisions
staying accountable
building better habits
reviewing progress
taking more consistent action
A good business coach helps you stop circling the same problem and start moving forward.
And for small business owners, that can be incredibly valuable.
Because let’s be honest, when it’s just you in the business, you can spend a lot of time stuck in your own head.
You think about changing your prices.
Then you talk yourself out of it.
You think about changing your offer.
Then you wonder if people will still buy.
You think about showing up more online.
Then you decide the dog needs walking, the washing needs doing and suddenly rearranging your Canva folders feels terribly urgent.
Business coaching can help you get out of that loop.
What Is Business Mentoring?
Business mentoring is slightly different.
A business mentor usually brings their own experience, guidance and practical knowledge to the conversation.
They don’t just ask questions. They can also share what they’ve seen, what they’ve learned, what might work, what might not work and what you may need to consider.
Mentoring is often more direct, more practical and more hands-on.
A business mentor can help you look at the business as a whole and understand what is really going on.
For example, business mentoring might help you with:
pricing your services
understanding your numbers
reviewing your profit
working out your business model
creating a marketing plan
improving your customer journey
identifying what is draining your time
making better decisions
building your pay into the business
This is why mentoring can be so helpful for new and small business owners.
Because sometimes you don’t just need someone to ask, “What do you think you should do?”
Sometimes you need someone to say, “Right, let’s look at the numbers, because this offer is keeping you busy but not actually making you any money.”
And yes, that can be a bit of a ta-da moment.
Sometimes a slightly uncomfortable one.
But still useful.
So Which One Do You Need?
The honest answer is: it depends where you are and what you’re struggling with.
If you already have a good understanding of your business, know your numbers, have clear offers and mostly need accountability, focus and confidence, then business coaching may be exactly what you need.
But if you’re still trying to work out your pricing, your profit, your marketing, your business model and how to actually pay yourself properly, then business mentoring may be more useful.
Because at that stage, you probably don’t just need motivation.
You need structure.
You need guidance.
You need someone to help you see what you can’t see because you’re too close to it.
And you need support from someone who understands that being good at what you do and knowing how to run a business are two completely different things.
Most of us didn’t go into business because we were desperate to spend our evenings looking at profit margins.
We started because we had a skill, a service, a product, a passion or an idea.
Then suddenly we had to become the marketing department, sales team, finance department, customer service desk, admin assistant and CEO.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, we were also supposed to get paid.
Which, quite frankly, is where it all gets a bit ridiculous.
The Problem Is Not Always What You Think It Is
Many small business owners come looking for help because they think they have a marketing problem.
They say things like:
“I need more clients.”
“I need more visibility.”
“I need to post more.”
“I need to get better at selling.”
“I need more enquiries.”
“I need more turnover.”
And sometimes, yes, that may be true.
But often, once we look properly, the real issue is something else.
Their prices are too low.
Their costs are too high.
Their offers are taking too much time to deliver.
Their business model doesn’t support the income they want.
They don’t know how much they need to make each month.
They’re not tracking what is working.
They’re chasing turnover instead of building profit.
And the big one?
They haven’t built their own pay into the business.
So they keep working harder, selling more and doing all the things, but still not paying themselves properly.
That is why I always say:
Stop chasing turnover.
Profit is where payday lives.
Because a business with more sales but no profit is not the dream.
It is just a very busy way of exhausting yourself.
Coaching Might Help You Take Action
Business coaching can help you move forward when you are stuck, overwhelmed or lacking direction.
It can help you create better habits, think differently, stay accountable and take action instead of overthinking everything.
That is really useful.
Because lots of small business owners know what they should be doing, but they still don’t do it.
They know they should follow up.
They know they should look at their prices.
They know they should review their costs.
They know they should send the email.
They know they should make the offer.
They know they should stop saying yes to work that leaves them with £3.42 and a nervous twitch.
But knowing and doing are not the same thing.
Coaching can help bridge that gap.
Mentoring Might Help You Know What Action to Take
Business mentoring can help when you don’t yet know what the right action is.
That’s a really important distinction.
Because small business owners are often very good at being busy.
They can spend hours creating content, tweaking websites, changing colours, joining new groups, buying new tools, watching webinars, redesigning lead magnets and planning launches.
But busy does not always mean useful.
Mentoring helps you step back and ask:
Is this the right thing to focus on?
Is this offer profitable?
Is this price sustainable?
Is this marketing bringing in the right people?
Is this business model actually going to pay me?
Is this where my time should be going?
Is this helping me build the business I actually want?
That kind of support can save you a lot of time, money and frustration.
Especially if you are in the early stages of business, or if you’ve been going for a while but still feel like the money is not matching the effort.
What Most Small Business Owners Actually Need
In my experience, most new and small business owners need a mixture of both.
They need some coaching because they need clarity, confidence and accountability.
But they also need mentoring because they need practical guidance, honest feedback and help understanding what is really going on in the business.
They need someone to help them make sense of the numbers.
They need someone to help them simplify the marketing.
They need someone to help them look at the business model.
They need someone to help them stop guessing.
They need someone to help them become the CEO of the business, not just the person doing all the work.
Because that is where things start to change.
When you stop reacting to everything.
When you stop chasing every new idea.
When you stop assuming more turnover will fix everything.
When you stop waiting until you’re bigger to pay yourself.
When you start looking at the business properly.
That’s when you can build something stronger.
What I Mean by Figures Without Fear
A big part of my work is helping business owners understand their numbers in a way that feels simple, useful and not remotely terrifying.
Because your numbers are not there to judge you.
They are there to guide you.
They show you what is working.
They show you what needs to change.
They show you whether your prices are right.
They show you where the profit is going.
They show you how much you need to sell.
They show you whether your business can pay you properly.
That is what I call Figures Without Fear.
No scary spreadsheet nonsense.
No nodding along while secretly panicking.
No pretending you understand something when you don’t.
Just simple, practical numbers that help you make better decisions.
How to Know What Support Is Right for You
Here are a few questions to ask yourself.
Do I know how much my business needs to make each month?
Do I know how much I want to pay myself?
Do I know which offers make the most profit?
Do I know whether my prices are actually working?
Do I know where my enquiries are coming from?
Do I know how many clients or sales I need each month?
Do I have a clear plan, or am I mostly winging it?
Do I feel like I’m leading my business, or just working in it?
If you can answer those questions clearly, coaching may help you stay focused and take action.
But if those questions make you want to close the laptop and go and make a cup of tea, mentoring may be the better place to start.
Because you probably need someone to help you untangle the business before you can confidently move it forward.
You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out
This is the bit I really want you to hear.
You do not need to have everything sorted before you ask for help.
That is the whole point of getting support.
You don’t need to know your numbers perfectly.
You don’t need to have a polished business plan.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
You don’t need to pretend everything is fine when it isn’t.
If your business is making sales but not paying you properly, that is enough of a reason to get support.
If you are busy but not profitable, that is enough.
If you are overwhelmed, unsure and tired of winging it, that is enough.
If you know something needs to change but you don’t know where to start, that is enough.
You are not failing.
You may simply be missing the right structure, support and strategy.
So, Business Coaching or Business Mentoring?
Business coaching helps you move forward.
Business mentoring helps you understand where to move and why.
Coaching can help you take action.
Mentoring can help you make better decisions.
Coaching can help with accountability.
Mentoring can help with clarity, structure and practical guidance.
And for many small business owners, the magic is in having a bit of both.
Someone who can support you, challenge you, guide you and help you look at the business properly.
Someone who can help you stop chasing turnover and start building profit.
Someone who can help you understand the numbers without fear.
Someone who can help you build a business that pays you properly.
Because your business should not just keep you busy.
It should support you too.
